Young Chan and I just book our trip south for Memorial Day weekend! We are celebrating our year living in Texas by hitting the desert for some hiking and exploring. Thinking about and planning this trip gets me thinking about our most recent trip we took together, New Mexico.
In a spontaneous mood, I convinced Young to drive ten hours with me Saturday morning to see The White Sands National Monument near Las Cruces New Mexico. I figure its cheap, fun, and memorable, so those beat out the odds of being tired and driving twenty hours in two days… yea I'm a bit crazy! Regardless, Young Chan was a good sport!
We started the drive at about five am Saturday morning and brought a couple meals and snacks to keep us from stoping too much. It was a very peaceful and relaxing drive in. The scenery was amazing and one of us would sleep while the other drove. We got to the White Sands at about 4 and played until dark!
We spent the night at the cutest air b and b, and took off at 6 am Sunday morning. We drove a couple hours to the Carlsbad Caverns for a little cave walking before heading back on the road.
Fortunately/unfortunately the elevator was broken. We sure did get our exercise!
It was dark, smelly, and cold. We practically ran down and about an hour in turned back so we could get home before midnight. I really learned a new definition for shin splints that day! It was all worth it to see such amazing nature, and we can't wait to see what Big Bend has in store for us!
